FERRAGOSTO IN ITALY

August 15, 2013 | Posted By: | BLOG |

The Emperor Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome in 18 BC, decided to celebrate the feriae Augusti in this month. August 15th is the date chosen to feast the Assumption of the Virgin Maria (or in Christian dogma the ascent into heaven of Christ’s mother), wanted by Pope Pio XII in 1950, and the Emperor Augustus.
This festival has maintained the same importance and popularity through the millennia.
For this reason, in Italy, today is a holiday and the beaches are crowded with people who celebrate till the night with fireworks and the statue of the Virgin Maria is took along the coast by boat… at least here in Cecina-Tuscany, where I am.
So….. HAPPY FERRAGOSTO to all !!!!
